How do I achieve my goals?
This is a loaded question, most of us don’t really know how to do it, mainly because we haven’t really thought enough about it. We’ve only thought of the goal itself.
I want to lose weight
I want to back squat me body weight
I want to do a pull up
I want to run a marathon
Know have you ever asked yourself: what is a goal?
A goal can be defined as an observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a timeframe.
Too often we come up with a goal, the end result, with out thinking about what we actually need to do to get there; or more importantly WHY the goal is important to us. We have all set goals and haven’t finished them, just like we have all set goals that we did accomplish. So why do we achieve some but not others?
One of the biggest reasons why we fail to achieve a goal, Is because we don’t know why we want to achieve it. When our goal is: I want to get in shape. But we haven’t asked ourself WHY we want to get in shape. The chances of falling off track are fairly high, and we haven’t given ourselves a reason to achieve it.
Here’s a small trick, Keep asking yourself WHY, not once or twice, but 4,5,6, even 7+ times. The deeper we dive into this the truer the reason becomes, heres an example
I want to get in shape,
to be healthy,
Why is that important to you?
to feel better
Why do you what to feel better?
I get tired easily, I want more energy
ok, how will more energy change your life?
I’ll be a better parent to my kids
Why do you want to be a better parent?
I want to set a good example for my kids, so I can enjoy my time with them for as long as possible.,
Can you give me an example?
I really enjoy hiking, Id like to one day hike Mt Kilimanjaro with my kids.
Now we can attach that emotion to the the desired goal, and help to take action towards it. Now you have a reason to get in shape, To live out one of your dreams, travel to a new place and experience something truly amazing.
We have now attached the goal of getting in shape with an emotional, long term goal of climbing a mountain. Now when you don’t want to go to the gym, all you have to do is think about Mt Kilimanjaro and getting t the gym will become much easier.
A plan of action can now be developed, we have a specific goal – climb Mt Kilimanjaro – which will take you on a journey through creating healthy habits, leading to a healthy lifestyle, leading to happier life with kids, leading to an incredible bucket list goal accomplished.
