Why do you exercise? Is it to lose 10 pounds, to complete a race, to get your dream job? How many times have you “started” again? Changing your lifestyle isn’t an easy thing to do; you have spent your entire life up until this point creating habits; everything you do is a habit. One of the biggest things that hold us back from creating a new habit is an old one. Let’s see how we can change our narrative so we can start getting what we want.
How are you talking to YOU?
The thing that’s holding you back is you. We all have a story that we tell ourselves, is your story supporting your goals? Or is it holding you back from achieving them? If the goal is to lose 10 pounds, you need to know WHY that’s your goal. What does that mean to you, and how will it change your life. Let’s reread the end of that sentence; CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
If we continue to talk to ourselves the way we currently are, the change you are after will always just be a dream. You must start to think like the person you want to be. How do you think when your ten pounds lighter? How do you feel?
If the plan is to work hard for a few months by going on a strict diet and exercising to get the weight off and then stop once its off, do you think you’ll be successful in keeping the weight off? My guess is no; I see it all the time.
To change your life, you must first change the conversation you are having with yourself. If you don’t, you won’t have a lifestyle change, you’ll experience a period of time when you tried something different, and you’ll resort back to your old ways.
Questions to ask yourself (insert your goal where underlined)
How does the person who is 10 pounds lighter think about themselves?
What does the runner do every day to keep running?
How does the firefighter’s diet support her activity?
How does the perfect mom think about her child when he’s lashing out?
To change your life, you have to change the way you think about yourself. It’s not all done at once; by taking Small Simple Steps, your story starts to become what you want it to be. Do you want to make a short term change or one that lasts forever?
