Do you know your body?

Do you feel your well in-tune with your body? or do you feel it’s like the dark side of the moon?

I have recently been reading “The Body” by Bill Bryson.  I am finding it rather fascinating.  After years of meditation and trying to bring awareness of my body and mind, I realize that there is so much I don’t know

 There is so much humans have learned about our bodies and yet over the millions of years that humans or erected creatures, have been around.  There are still so many things we don’t understand.

On the surface we are machines made of bones, muscles, skin and hair.  Yet when it comes down to it, we are just tiny molecules working in vast complex systems sending signals to millions of cells throughout our body at any given second just so we can get through the day. 

Our bodies are constantly reacting, to the breeze of the wind, to touch of water and to the food we eat.

We do the same thing on a number of accounts, we react to what happens to us physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Some of our reactions we can control, if your cold you put a sweater on, if you’re hungry you eat and if you’re tired you sleep. 

With most acts we do during our day, how often do we stop to think about the reaction that our actions have on our body? 

I think for most of us the answer is not that often. 

We tend to treat others, pets and even our favourite items better than we treat ourselves, think about it. 

Do you have a pet? how well do you treat your dog or cat in relation to siblings?   Do you constantly shower your sister or brother with love and hundreds of hugs and kisses every time you see them? 

Maybe you’re a car buff and you rebuild old cars, or you have a green thumb and your plants get more attention than those closest to you. 

There are areas of our lives that we pour our hearts into and invest large amounts of time.  These hobbies and interests are what keep us going, they define us and give us purpose in life.  Most help to bring out our creative side and challenge us intellectually.  

When we are young, we want to be able to do these things forever, we want to stay fresh, explore and learn.  And as we age, we find we slow down, we don’t have as much energy as we once did, and we accept this.   But sometimes we start to get old sooner than we need to.

You see it’s our bodies that control how we act and react to our surroundings, most of this happens on a subconscious level, your body just does. 

If we give our bodies what they need, they react in a positive way.  Give it the right fuel and amount of rest, you’ll feel energized, alert and ready to take on any challenge. 

Fill your body with garbage, and you’ll be stuck to the couch, develop complications and wonder how you ever had the energy you once did as a child.  The cost to this is usually those hobbies we once loved.

The more you understand a plant the better you will be able to grow that plant.  The more you understand a car, then better you will be able to keep that car going. 

So how well do you know your body?  do you know what it needs? what fuel it takes, how much rest to give it, the amount of activity it needs?
